Brazil's Carlos Prates and Islam Makhachev's manager Ali Abdelaziz exchanged sharp words on social media. Abdelaziz said Islam could be the greatest fighter of this generation and would embarrass Prates in the octagon. Prates replied that if Makhachev fights for love of the sport, he should have faced the top contender in January, and said he will end Makhachev's legacy.
Prates first faces Michael Morales at UFC 336 for an interim title. The event, UFC 336: Van vs Kape, is scheduled for January 31, 2027, at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. Morales is 19-0-0 and ranked third in the UFC welterweight division.
Makhachev is the UFC welterweight champion with a 29-1-0 record. The UFC ranks him first in the pound-for-pound list.
